I know. It probably sounds foolish, especially considering the juggernaut that PSX would become. I have been playing some 32X classics the past few days and realized how much games like Metal Head, Tempo, and T-Mek look and play like early Playstation games. If I didn't know different, I would believe Metal Head is being played on Playstation during gameplay. The graphics and sound are of that quality. Considering that both were essentially 32 bit consoles, could 32X have been a strong competitor for Sony? Most likely just imagining, but it certainly would have taken more marketing prowess than Sega ever showed during those years.
I think that may have been Sega's intent in releasing the 32X. They were looking to extend the console's lifespan by giving it enhanced features. With proper marketing, it probably would have helped the system compete against the PlayStation.
I think it could have competed. The carts would have been the better route, since early Playstation game load times seem to take forever. Using the Sega CD as well might have given the 32X a helping hand. The five 32X CD titles released are not the best but they show improvement over the standard Sega CD.
Now that I have a 32X I can see how Sega took advantage of what it could offer for some of its games. I think it did what it was supposed to but it was abandoned far too soon to have a real impact. Unfortunately, many of the games in its library are not stellar.
