1What are your top three games? Empty What are your top three games? Sun 18 Mar 2012, 12:55 am

Glutton Boy

Hey all!

Let's get a little discussion going here... I know it's an old premise, but let's say for the heck of it you're on a deserted island with an Intellivision and three - or maybe to make it easier, five - games. What are they?

I'm somewhat new to the Intellivision, so I may overlook a popular title that I just haven't experienced, but here's my list:

1) Astrosmash. I was raised on Atari, and had the M Network equivalent, Astroblast. Looooved this game. I'd have to choose it because It's easy to pick up and play and is just as much fun for a five minute session as it is to see just how long you can play before losing.

2) Thunder Castle. I'm not sure what it is about this game- it's not so action-packed or anything- but I love it. To me it's an underrated maze game with great music. The only thing that might have kept this off my list is I can only make it through the first two screens, but I figure if I were trapped on an island, I'd have plenty of time to improve. Smile

3) Snafu. I know, I know... for all of the involved, technical, complex games for the Intellivison, why choose Snafu? Love the music, and for a simple game it somehow stays fresh. The music is going through my head as I type this. Smile

4) Donkey Kong (2011). I can't give all of my love to only the releases from back in the day. To me, this game is a huge technical achievement, and despite it's shortcomings, I can still call it a favorite. I was obsessed with Colecovision Donkey Kong as a kid, and that's a factor as well.

5) MLB Baseball. It was the sports games that really set the standard for excellence for the Intellivision. I remember hating George Plimpton as a kid during thoise commercials comparing Atari 2600 to Intellivision. I was a fanboy of the 2600 the way there are Xbox and PS fans today, but I could not deny the greatness of baseball, football, etc. compared to their Atari counterparts. (For this selection, I'm assuming I'd have one person play or another player.)

Honorable mentions: Burgertime and Shark Shark

Thanks! I played BurgerTime at a friends when we kids and I always thought what an amazing system. Always thought he was a lucky kid to have owned the Intellivision when it was new.

It sounds like that new Donkey Kong Arcade will take quite a while before you get tired of playing.

But if you like Pitfall and Stampede you might want to try the Intellivision versions of those two games. Stampede looks cleaner than the 2600 version and it challenges you in a good way to play Pitfall using the Intellivision controller.

I've never played Stampede, so maybe I should give it a try on the Intellivision. I've seen comparison videos and the Intellivision version certainly looks better. Insofar as Pitfall, I prefer Pitfall II. I haven't even checked if it was released for the Intellivision.

I do not think it was Pitfall II ever came out for the Intellivision. Maybe some of the other members will chime in?

Pitfall II is amazing on the 2600 and the extra level on the 5200 and 8-bit is pretty cool.

I just did a search on Google and could not find that it was made for the Inty. I do have the 5200 version, though. Smile

I must be in the minority, but Pitfall II music is irritating as all get out. I have beaten the VCS version, but only with the sound turned all the way down. I often wished David Crane had included an "options" menu at the game start up, allowing the player to turn off the music.

That music did get old fast but for me it was and still is "I can't believe that game is played on the 2600".

You are right sloan an options menu would have been nice.

Not the first time I've heard folks complain about the music. It may have been a good idea to have the option to turn it off for those who didn't like the music. This is, however, one of the few 2600 games that has true in-game music.

It is pretty amazing when you compare it to other games of the same time period.

That reminds me of what Atlantis might look like or since there is an Intellivision game called Utopia. Maybe a Utopian city.

my top three games?
Well,
1) A.D.&D. Treasure of Tarmin (for the suspense, the width of the environment and the sense of mystery)
2) A.D.&D. aka Cloudy Mountain (especially for the suspense... when I was a kid those ggggrrrrr from the dark were really frightening)
3) Thunder Castle or, better yet, Mystic Castle (for the action, the music and the graphics) Very Happy
